Which BMW 3 Series do you have in India?

F30 320d/330i cars dominate the used market; G20 and 330Li are the current India cars. The search queries change with the engine code.
Generation India years (approx.) Common India cars Engine codes to know What people search
E90 ~2005–2012 320d, 325i, 330d N47 diesel, N52/N54 petrol Timing chain, VANOS, cooling
F30 2012–2019 320d, 320i, 328i, 330i N47 then B47 diesel; N20 then B48 petrol Oil leak, chain rattle, water pump
G20 / 330Li LWB 2019–present 330i, 330Li, 320d (markets) B48 petrol, B47 diesel Electronics, arms, battery, ADAS

Engine rule of thumb: early F30 320d (N47, roughly to 2015) and early F30 petrol N20 (roughly 2012–2015) are the cars behind “BMW 3 Series timing chain” searches. From about 2015–16 BMW moved to B47 / B48. Those still need service — they do not need the same fear.

1. “BMW 3 Series oil leak” — valve cover and filter housing

This is the number-one 3 Series search after “service cost.” Heat-cycled gaskets on N20, N55, B48 and diesel fours seep. Oil hits a hot exhaust or belt and you get the burning smell people describe after a drive.

Symptoms people type

  • Oil spots on the parking bay
  • Burning-oil smell after 20 minutes of driving
  • Low oil warning between services
  • Belt noise if oil has reached the accessory belt

Usual leak points

  1. Valve-cover gasket (most common)
  2. Oil-filter housing gasket (oil and sometimes coolant on the same housing)
  3. Oil-pan gasket on higher-km cars
  4. Valve-cover oil seeping onto coils — misfire + smell

Do not keep topping up and ignoring it. Oil on a belt can throw the belt and take the water pump or alternator with it.

Job (typical Delhi NCR specialist, 2026) Typical range
Valve-cover gasket ₹8,000–₹18,000
Oil-filter housing gasket ₹10,000–₹25,000
Both gaskets in one visit ₹18,000–₹35,000

2. “BMW 3 Series overheating” — plastic cooling parts + Delhi heat

BMW put plastic in the thermostat housing, expansion tank and, on many engines, an electric water pump. Forty-five-degree traffic finds every one of them.

Symptoms

  • Temperature needle climbing on Ring Road / Sohna Road in May
  • Sweet coolant smell, pink/blue crust on a housing
  • Heater blowing lukewarm
  • Electric-fan running after you shut the engine

Stop driving if the warning is on or steam is visible. A planned pump + thermostat job is ₹22,000–₹45,000. An ignored overheat becomes a head conversation.

Job Typical specialist range
Thermostat / housing ₹8,000–₹18,000
Electric water pump ₹18,000–₹35,000
Pump + thermostat package ₹25,000–₹50,000
Expansion tank ₹4,000–₹10,000

3. “BMW 320d timing chain” and “cold start rattle”

This query is specific. It does not apply to every 3 Series.

Engine Cars Risk Classic symptom
N47 diesel E90 and early F30 320d (~to 2015) High if oil was stretched Rattle from the rear of the engine on cold start
N20 petrol Early F30 320i / 328i (~2012–2015) High if neglected Rattle from the front of the engine on cold start
B47 / B48 Later F30, G20, 330Li Much lower Treat as a normal engine — still use correct oil

On N47 the chain sits at the back of the engine, so labour is the bill. On N20 it is at the front. Both get worse with cheap oil and 15,000 km intervals in Indian heat.

When to stop and inspect

  • Metallic rattle for more than a second or two on a cold start
  • Rattle that does not fade as oil pressure builds
  • Cam-correlation codes (P0011 / P0012 / P0016 / P0017) plus the noise

Typical specialist chain job in India: ₹85,000–₹1.60 lakh+ depending on engine and how far it has gone. That is why a cold-start video on your phone is worth bringing to the booking.

Later B47/B48 cars are not “timing-chain free.” They are not the N47 story. Service them; do not panic-buy a chain kit because a forum thread mixed generations.

4. “BMW 3 Series knocking sound” — arms, links, mounts

Same Indian-road story as the X1, slightly different geometry.

Symptoms

  • One-corner clunk over a speed breaker
  • Car pulls after a pothole
  • Idle shake in the cabin that fades above ~1,200 rpm (mounts)
  • Inner-edge tyre wear
Job Typical specialist range
Drop links (pair) ₹3,500–₹10,000
Front control arms / bushes ₹18,000–₹45,000
Engine / gearbox mounts (pair) ₹15,000–₹40,000
3D alignment ₹2,500–₹5,000

On G20 / 330Li cars with cameras, alignment or a windscreen change should include an ADAS check. That is a growing search of its own: “BMW lane assist not working after alignment.”

5. “BMW 3 Series battery drain”

Short Delhi trips, iDrive modules that do not sleep, start-stop, 45°C heat. AGM batteries on 3 Series cars often want replacing around year four — sooner if the car sits.

Symptoms

  • Dead after a weekend
  • Start-stop permanently off
  • Random lights that vanish after a jump
  • iDrive reboot on F30

Replace and register the battery on the car. A cheap battery with no coding dies early. Also test for a drain; a new battery will not fix a module that stayed awake.

Typical AGM + registration: ₹16,000–₹32,000.

6. “BMW 3 Series jerks” — ZF 8-speed

Most F30 and G20 automatics use the ZF 8-speed. “Lifetime fluid” is a poor policy in Indian traffic.

  • Pause into Drive at lights
  • Flare or harsh 2–3 upshift when cold
  • Shudder at 20–40 km/h

First job: fluid + filter + adaptations, typically ₹22,000–₹38,000. Internals only after a scan and a road test. Flashing gearbox light — tow, do not drive.

7. Other high-search 3 Series issues

Carbon on petrol direct-injection (N20 / B48 / B58)

Intake valves do not get washed by fuel. Rough idle and loss of pull after 80,000–1,00,000 km. Walnut blast typically ₹22,000–₹40,000.

Diesel DPF / EGR on 320d that only does school runs

Short trips never finish a regen. A highway run that gets the exhaust fully hot prevents more bills than additives. Open EGR-cooler campaigns on some B47 engines — check VIN at the dealer.

Run-flat tyres

Hard ride, fast wear on potholes, expensive set. Many owners switch to a quality conventional tyre plus a puncture plan — only with a fresh alignment.

Brakes in city traffic

Pads earlier than the brochure. Front pad + disc package typically ₹22,000–₹50,000 depending on M Sport vs standard.

8. “BMW 3 Series service cost in India”

There is no single number. Separate scheduled service from the surprise jobs above.

Item Authorised dealer (typical) Specialist (typical)
Annual oil service (320d / 330i / 330Li) ₹18,000–₹35,000 Often 25–40% lower with same spec oil
Major / 60,000 km style service ₹70,000–₹1.05 lakh Lower if you approve only what the scan needs
CBS “the car asked” In India city use, do not wait past 10,000 km or 12 months

The cars that feel “expensive” are usually F30s that skipped gearbox fluid, ignored a seep, or stretched oil until the chain complained. A G20 / 330Li on yearly oil and alignment is a different ownership story.

Used 3 Series in India — what to check before you pay

This cluster of searches (“used BMW 3 Series India,” “F30 buying guide”) belongs on the same page.

  1. Identify the engine from the VIN / service file — N47 / N20 vs B47 / B48.
  2. Cold-start video. Ten seconds of rattle is data.
  3. Look under the car and at the filter housing for seepage.
  4. Scan every module, not only engine.
  5. Ask for gearbox-fluid invoices, not only “full dealer service.”
  6. Tyre date codes and inner-edge wear.
  7. Test battery sleep after lock-up.

Walk away from a cheap early-F30 320d with no chain paperwork and a rattle you can hear from the next parking bay.

What to do this week

  1. Write the exact warning text and whether the rattle is front or rear of the engine.
  2. Do not stretch CBS oil in city use — 10,000 km or 12 months, correct Longlife spec.
  3. Stop for temperature warnings and flashing gearbox lights.
  4. Book a BMW-capable scan. A ₹1,000 OBD dongle will not talk to the body or transmission modules that matter.
  5. Ask for a written estimate with part origin (genuine / OEM) before strip-down.
  6. On G20 / 330Li, ask about ADAS after alignment or glass work.
  7. Check VIN at the dealer for open campaigns.

FAQ: BMW 3 Series problems in India

Is the BMW 3 Series unreliable in India?

No, if you match the engine to the service history. Early N47 / N20 cars that skipped oil are the expensive ones. Later F30 and G20 / 330Li cars on yearly oil are ordinary luxury-sedan ownership.

Which 3 Series years to avoid?

Scrutinise 2012–early 2015 F30 320d (N47) and early N20 petrols unless the chain is documented. Facelift F30 B47/B48 and G20 are the easier used buys.

How much is BMW 3 Series service in Delhi?

Plan ₹18,000–₹35,000 at a dealer for a routine oil service, often less at a specialist using the same spec oil. Major services and wear items sit on top of that.

3 Series vs X1 — which costs less to run?

The X1 creates more tyre and arm bills. The 3 Series creates more oil-leak and cooling bills on older engines. Neither likes stretched CBS intervals.

Does a cold-start rattle always mean a new chain?

It means inspect now. Short tick that dies in a second can be something else. A metallic rattle that stays, plus correlation codes, is the chain conversation — especially on N47 and N20.

Can I service a 3 Series outside the dealer in India?

Yes after warranty, and for many running repairs if parts and records are correct. Use the dealer for campaigns and in-warranty claims.

330Li LWB — same problems as the old 320d?

No. The current long-wheelbase petrol is a B48-family car. Expect electronics, alignment, battery and city brake wear — not the classic N47 chain thread.

When should I stop driving?

Temperature warning, flashing gearbox light, loud chain rattle that does not fade, or a misfire with oil on the belt. Tow it.

Book a 3 Series diagnosis

If your 3 Series smells of oil, climbs in temperature, rattles on a cold morning, knocks over breakers or dies after a weekend, start with a scan — not a guess.
