ToggleWhich Mercedes GLC do you have in India?
| Generation | India years (approx.) | Common India variants | What people search first |
|---|---|---|---|
| X253 | ~2016–2022 | GLC 220d, GLC 300, Coupe | Knocking, 9G-Tronic, COMAND screen, battery |
| X254 | 2023–present | GLC 220d, GLC 300, mild-hybrid | Electronics / 48V, ADAS after alignment, AC in summer |
India GLC cars are mostly front- or all-wheel drive with steel springs. AIR BODY CONTROL (air suspension) was an option, more common on some Coupe and higher-spec cars — not standard like an E 350d. If your GLC does not sit low overnight, do not quote an air-strut job from an E-Class article.
What Indians actually Google about the GLC
| Search query | Usual cause in India | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes GLC knocking sound front | Lower-arm bushes, drop links | Section 1 |
| GLC gearbox jerk / 9G-Tronic lag | Old ATF, adaptations, early software | Section 2 |
| GLC battery drain / won’t start | AGM + short trips + modules awake | Section 3 |
| GLC 220d DPF / AdBlue warning | School-run duty cycle | Section 4 |
| GLC sitting low / air suspension | Only if AIR BODY CONTROL is fitted | Section 5 |
| GLC AC not cooling Delhi | Condenser blocked with dust | Section 6 |

1. “GLC knocking sound” — bushes, not air springs
This is the most common GLC job in Delhi NCR. The X253 shares the C-Class (W205) front end. Potholes and speed breakers finish lower-arm bushes and drop links from about 60,000–1,00,000 km — earlier if the car lives on broken inner roads.
Symptoms people type
- Single clunk from a front corner over a breaker
- Steering off-centre after one bad hit
- Inner-edge tyre wear within a season of new rubber
- Vague on-centre feel at 80–100 km/h
Replacing tyres without a play check and a 3D alignment is how the same wear returns in 8,000 km.
| Job (typical Delhi NCR specialist, 2026) | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Drop links (pair) | ₹4,000–₹12,000 |
| Front lower arms / bushes | ₹20,000–₹50,000 |
| Rear multi-link bushes | ₹25,000–₹60,000 |
| 3D wheel alignment | ₹2,500–₹5,000 |
On 2019-and-newer GLCs with cameras and radar, alignment or a windscreen change should be followed by an ADAS calibration check. Skipping it is how lane-keep and adaptive-cruise errors show up a week later.
2. “GLC gearbox jerk” — 9G-Tronic
Almost every India GLC uses the 9G-Tronic automatic. In Delhi / Mumbai / Bengaluru traffic it is the second complaint after suspension.
Symptoms
- Pause when you select D at a light
- Harsh 2–3 upshift when cold
- Shudder on light throttle at 20–40 km/h
- “Gearbox malfunction” or limp mode
What it usually is — in this order
- Old ATF and a skipped filter (Mercedes “lifetime oil” is not lifetime in Indian traffic)
- Adaptation values that need a reset after fluid service
- Software that was never updated — more common on early X253 (2016–2018)
- Valve body / conductor-plate wear — the expensive end
Road-test cold and hot, scan transmission codes, and look at fluid condition before quoting a gearbox. Many cars only need fluid, filter and adaptations.
| Job | Typical specialist range |
|---|---|
| 9G-Tronic fluid + filter + adaptations | ₹22,000–₹40,000 |
| 4MATIC transfer-case fluid (if xDrive-style AWD) | ₹8,000–₹18,000 — do not skip on AWD cars |
| Valve body / major internal work | ₹80,000–₹2.50 lakh+ — only after diagnosis |
Stop driving if the car will not engage Drive, jumps to neutral, or the gearbox warning is flashing. Tow it.
3. “GLC battery drain”
Short city trips, start-stop, COMAND or MBUX that does not sleep, 45°C under-bonnet heat. AGM batteries on GLCs often want replacing around year four.
Symptoms
- Dead after a weekend parked
- Start-stop permanently off
- Parking sensors and cameras dropping out together
- On X254: 48V / hybrid warnings that are really a weak 12V side
Replace and code the battery. A module that stayed awake will kill the new one. On newer mild-hybrid GLCs, test both the 12V and the 48V support battery before you approve a control unit.
| Job | Typical specialist range |
|---|---|
| Drain test + sleep-mode check | ₹2,500–₹6,000 |
| AGM main battery + registration | ₹18,000–₹40,000 |
| Auxiliary / 48V support battery | ₹12,000–₹28,000 |
4. “GLC 220d DPF warning”
Diesels that only do 4–8 km school runs never finish a regeneration. That is the India pattern — not a “bad engine.”
- DPF / particulate warning after weeks of short trips
- AdBlue / NOx countdown even with a full tank (sensor or dosing, not always an empty bottle)
- Limp mode if ignored
A proper highway run that gets the exhaust fully hot prevents more bills than additives. Open emissions campaigns on some OM654 cars — check the VIN at the dealer. Propulsion and chain-related campaigns belong there, not in a general bay.
Older petrol GLC 300 cars on the M274 can show timing-chain tensioner noise around high kilometres if oil was stretched. Cold-start rattle that does not fade needs a scan before you assume “it’s just the diesel story.”
5. “GLC sitting low” — only if it has air suspension
Most India GLCs will not sag overnight. If yours does, it has optional AIR BODY CONTROL. Confirm that before anyone quotes an E-Class air strut.
Symptoms (air-equipped cars only)
- One corner or the tail down after parking
- Compressor running after you lock the car
- “Suspension malfunction” / “Visit workshop”
Fix the leak before the compressor. A new compressor on a leaking spring dies the same way.
| Job (air-equipped GLC only) | Typical specialist range |
|---|---|
| One air spring / strut | ₹80,000–₹1.80 lakh |
| Compressor | ₹55,000–₹1.60 lakh |
| Valve block | ₹35,000–₹70,000 |
Steel-sprung GLC with a lean is almost always a spring, damper or arm — not AIRMATIC. Measure ride height before parts are ordered.
6. AC weak in May, COMAND screen, water after rain
AC not cooling
Delhi dust packs the condenser. A gas top-up without cleaning the condenser is a repeat visit in June. Typical specialist condenser clean + gas check: ₹3,500–₹9,000 if no leak; more if the condenser or compressor is actually failed.
COMAND black screen (X253)
Early and mid X253 cars are known for a dead or flickering COMAND display. Often the unit, sometimes a supply or software path. Scan before you buy a screen.
Wet footwell after rain (early X253)
Bulkhead and cowl drains clog. Water near modules causes “random” electrical clusters. Clear drains and dry the cabin before replacing a SAM or ECU.
7. Used GLC in India — what to check before you pay
- Steel spring or AIR BODY CONTROL — ask, then look at ride height after an overnight park.
- Cold and hot take-off for 9G-Tronic delay.
- Knock over a breaker, then inner edges of the front tyres.
- Full module scan, not only the engine.
- Gearbox and transfer-case fluid invoices, not only “dealer service done.”
- On 220d: DPF soot load if the car was a short-trip commuter.
- VIN check at Mercedes for open campaigns (OM654 chain / coolant items on some builds).
- COMAND or MBUX actually working, cameras included.
8. “Mercedes GLC service cost in India”
| Item | Authorised dealer (typical) | Specialist (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Service A / annual | ₹25,000–₹38,000 | Often 25–40% lower with OEM-spec parts |
| Service B / major | ₹36,000–₹52,000 | Lower if you approve only what the scan needs |
| Around 60,000 km package | ₹82,000–₹1.20 lakh | Depends on brakes, ATF and arms |
| Front pads + discs | ₹45,000–₹90,000 | ₹25,000–₹50,000 |
The jump is not the oil change. It is arms, tyres, a skipped 9G-Tronic service, and — only on air-equipped cars — a spring. Treat 10,000 km or 12 months as the working interval in city use, and 9G-Tronic fluid around 60,000 km.
What to do this week
- Note whether the knock is left, right, or both — and whether the car sits low in the morning.
- Do not stretch service because the cluster has not “asked.”
- Stop for a flashing gearbox light or a car that will not select Drive.
- Book a Mercedes-capable scan. A generic OBD reader misses body and transmission modules.
- Ask for a written estimate with part origin before strip-down.
- After arms, height or windscreen work, ask about alignment and ADAS.
- Check VIN at the dealer for open campaigns.
Dealer or Wheel Force Centre?
| Situation | Where to go |
|---|---|
| In warranty, recall, ECU / chain campaign | Authorised Mercedes dealer |
| Out-of-warranty arms, 9G-Tronic service, battery, AC, diagnosis | Bosch-authorised luxury specialist |
| Cashless accident repair | Workshop that already handles insurer surveyors |
| Garage quoting air struts on a steel-sprung GLC | Walk away |
Independent service does not automatically void an Indian warranty when OEM-spec parts, correct procedure and invoices are kept. Warranty claims and official campaigns still run through Mercedes.

FAQ: Mercedes GLC problems in India
Is the Mercedes GLC unreliable in India?
No. The cars that cost a lot skipped gearbox fluid, ignored a front knock until the tyres were gone, or only ever did 5 km trips on a diesel. Serviced on an India interval, the GLC is a normal luxury-SUV ownership story.
Does every GLC have air suspension?
No. Most India GLC 220d and GLC 300 cars are steel-sprung. Air suspension is an option. If the car does not sit down overnight, look at bushes first.
How much is GLC service in Delhi?
Plan ₹25,000–₹38,000 at a dealer for a routine annual service, often less at a specialist. Major services and brakes sit on top of that.
GLC vs E-Class — which has fewer bills?
The GLC creates more arm and tyre bills because it is a heavier daily SUV. The E-Class creates more AIRMATIC bills on air-equipped variants. Gearbox and battery complaints overlap.
Why does my GLC jerk in traffic?
Usually 9G-Tronic fluid and adaptations, especially if the car has never had a gearbox service. Scan and road-test before anyone quotes a new transmission.
Can I service a GLC outside the dealer in India?
Yes after warranty, and for many running repairs if parts and records are correct. Use the dealer for campaigns and in-warranty claims.
GLC 220d vs GLC 300 — which visits the workshop more?
220d cars on short trips generate DPF and AdBlue complaints. 300 petrol cars generate more cooling and, on older M274 engines, chain-tensioner attention if oil was stretched. Both eat front bushes on Delhi roads.
When should I stop driving?
Flashing gearbox light, a car that will not select Drive, or a temperature warning. A morning-dead battery can be jump-started to the workshop — find the drain the same day.
Book a GLC diagnosis
If your GLC knocks over breakers, jerks at lights, dies after a weekend or throws a DPF warning, start with a scan — not a guess.
