Premier Padmini Was Most Loved Car In India

In 1964, Premier Automobiles Limited (PAL) in association with car Italian car company Fiat had
launched a new car in India, Fiat 1100 ‘Delight’. This car was taken with open hands by then people
of India.
Eight years later, Premier Automobiles Limited (PAL) dissolve the contract with Fiat and started its
own version of Fiat 1100 Delight, which was first called the President and then named as ‘Padmini’.

The car was popular as ‘Premier Padmini’. It was the only alternative and rival to the Ambassador.
It was considered more driver friendly in terms of handling and driving experience then Ambassador.
Padmini was less bulky and looked smart. It became first choice among youngsters, celebrities,
businessmen and was the sought-after family car.

Premier Padmini had powefull 1089 CC engine which could produce 48hp of power @4,800rpm and
a peak torque of 71Nm @ 3,000rpm. It was paired to a 4-speed manual transmission.

The biggest challenge for Padmini was the rising popularity of Maruti 800. PAL also made some changes
in looks and engine as well to counter Maruti but soon started loosing the ground.

Then in late 90’s when pollution was the main concerned, Premier Padmini was unable to meet the
BS2 Emission norms and had finally stopped production in the year 2000.

Till few years back, you might had seen Premier Padmini as taxi popular as Kali-Peeli Taxi.

The era of Premier Padmini will always be remembered.
