If you are driving a Diesel Car in Delhi over 10 years old, then be ready to pay fine of Rs. 10,000.

Same fine is applicable for petrol cars older than 15 years.

Apart from heavy fine your car can be confiscated and scrapped.

On October 29, 2018, the Supreme Court issued order prohibiting the operation of 15-year-old petrol and diesel vehicles older than 10 years in the national capital region and directed the transport department and Delhi traffic police to impound such vehicles.

In a recent report, there are approx. 3.5 lakh vehicles plying on Delhi roads which are not valid or fit according to new vehicle scrappage policy issued by Ministry of Road Transport.

Vehicular pollution has raised to the alarming level, so Government and institutions like NGT are devising ways to control number of vehicles.

Currently BS-VI emissions are applicable in India.

New Scrappage policy will come into effect from October 1, 2021 across India.

Salient points of new Scrappage policy:

  • Commercial vehicles of more than 15 years and passenger vehicles of more than 20 years will have to be mandatorly scrapped.
  • If you scrap your car, you can get a 5% rebate on the purchase of new cars.
  • If you wish to renew, Renewal charges of registration of cars older than 15 years has increased to Rs. 5000.
  • Delays in applying for a renewal of a registration certificate Rs. 500 for a month
  • Cost of Fitness Test = Rs. 800 – Rs. 1000
  • Renewal of fitness Certificates for cars = Rs. 7500
  • The government is also setting up authorized vehicle scrapping centers to facilitate scrapping
    of cars. This will generate huge direct and indirect employment opportunities in India.
